Savannah Regional Minister urges cement price reduction amid Cedi appreciation

Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Beiwuribe has called on the Savannah Diamond Cement Company to reduce the prices of cement, citing the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

Speaking during a tour of the company’s operations in Buipe, the Minister stressed the need for key industry players to respond to favorable economic indicators by easing the financial burden on Ghanaians.

“The US dollar has come down and the cedi is gaining strength, With cement production relying primarily on local materials, there is no justification for current price levels to remain unchanged”

The Minister noted that Savannah Diamond Cement, a major cement producer in the northern sector, wields significant influence over market pricing.

“Being a major market player in the north, when they reduce their prices, other competitors will also be compelled to do the same,” he stated.

He appealed directly to the company to consider the positive macroeconomic environment as an opportunity to provide relief to consumers, particularly in construction and infrastructure sectors which are heavily impacted by cement pricing.

The visit also served as a broader engagement to familiarize the regional leadership with the company’s operations. The Minister emphasized that local authorities have a responsibility to ensure companies operating within their jurisdiction meet safety, social, and economic obligations.

During the inspection, the team identified lapses in safety protocols particularly at the explosive storage site. The Minister ordered immediate remedial action and directed the company to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to provide 24-hour security for high-risk materials stored on site.

In addition to price concerns, the Minister urged Diamond Cement to increase wages for its workers and boost local employment.

“It’s high time the company start to employ more people directly, rather than relying heavily on secondary service providers because the benefits of the company to the local people must be clear and impactful,” he said.
