Nigeria soar to Unity Cup final with hard-fought win over Ghana

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have booked their spot in the Unity Cup final after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ghana.

Coach Eric Challe’s side used the match as preparation for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and despite some nerves in the second half, they managed to hold on for the victory.

Cyriel Dessers broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a well-taken goal, courtesy of a perfectly weighted cross from Ismaila Sodiq.

Just a few minutes later, the Super Eagles doubled their lead as Seyi Ajayi’s header deflected off Razak Simpson for an own goal.

However, the inexperienced Ghana side showed great spirit in the second half, reducing the deficit with 20 minutes to go as substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante scored his first international goal.

Caleb Yirenkyi also made a promising debut, scoring a goal, while Abu Francis was denied an equalizer by a superb save from Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria’s reward for their win is a final showdown with Jamaica, who edged out Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in a thrilling match.

The Reggae Boyz, now under the management of Steve McClaren, sealed their win with a penalty spot kick from Richard King deep into injury time.

The stage is set for an exciting Unity Cup final between Nigeria and Jamaica on Saturday.
