Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana and Policy Analyst, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has denounced the recent arrest of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Bosiako by EOCO.
EOCO picked up Bernard Antwi-Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 after he had been interrogated by the CID at the police headquarters over allegations of engaging in illegal mining.
Chairman Wontumi was detained at the EOCO’s office for over five hours, facing interrogation by EOCO officials until he was sent to the hospital for treatment later in the night.
Speaking on the issue on TV3 New Day’s The Big Issue, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Dr. Zaato accused the NDC government of acting out of vengeance by replicating some arrests of appointees and non-appointees made by previous NPP administration.
“When you see Chairman Wontumi being hauled and treated like this, then you should see that full vim of the state and the cohesive powers of the state have been unleashed to rain terror on political opponents.
“I’m happy Dr. Tanko-Computer is saying that look this happen yesterday to NDC appointees and so he is now telling us that what is happening now is called equivalency, you do me, I do you,” he noted.
Dr. Zaato implored the NDC government not to use vengeance in demanding accountability from former state appointees.
He noted that although he welcomes government’s quest to demand accountability, the justification of vengeance should not be the rationale behind arrests of individuals.
“Then the question I asked is where is the reset the NDC promise? Why aren’t you doing things differently? Why are you in a desperate attempt to replicate the bad things the NPP did? As a country shouldn’t we be striving to become better?
“I am happy that today government appointees and even non-appointees are being called to answer for accountability.
“What I am cautioning against is that it seems as if we are on a very slippery road of pure vengeance, it seems we are simply trying to justify everything that is happening on the basis that it happened yesterday, so don’t talk,” Dr. Zaato stated.
