Heart of Lions owner Dr. Randy Abbey is beaming with pride as his team stands on the threshold of a historic achievement in the current campaign.
Currently third on the league log with 54 points, just three points behind league leaders Nations FC, the Kpando-based club has been nothing short of impressive this season.
Abbey’s desire for the team is clear: win the Ghana Premier league for the first time and qualify for the prestigious CAF Champions League.
“I would want to win the league for the first time and also play in Africa( CAF Champions League).” He told 3Sports in an exclusive interview.
Despite facing a challenging schedule, with three away games and only one home game in their last four matches, Abbey is proud of his team’s achievements so far.
“For all the teams that are in the title race, we have the most difficult games. Because prior to the last games, for the four games we had to play, we had three away games and only one game at home. I’m pushing the boys and proud of what they have achieved so far.”
The team’s solid performances this term have been evident in their statistics.
They are joint-second in the league’s top scorers with 33 goals, just trailing former champions Medeama.
Defensively, they are the joint-fourth best team, having conceded just 20 goals. Only Nations Fc (16), Hearts of Oak (17) and GoldStars (19) beat them in that category.
As the season nears its climax, Abbey’s enthusiasm for the team’s prospects is palpable.
“Which ever way it ends, if we win the league I willl be the happiest man on earth but I’m even impressed with what we have done so far and I’m happy with the team. I think that we can even do better in subsequent seasons.”
With their sights set on history, Heart of Lions will need to summon all their strength and determination to overcome the challenges ahead and potentially win their first league title.
With just three games left to play, Heart of Lions will face a tough test against newcomers Young Apostles on Sunday followed by a home match against Bechem United.
The final game of the season promises to be a title decider, as they travel to face league leaders Nations.
