The Center for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA) has urged President John Dramani Mahama to withdraw government’s decision to allocate some GHS 200,000 cedis each to Members of Parliament for the execution of educational projects in their respective Constituencies.
According to the Center for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), the directive misaligns with the constitutional mandate of MPs and risks diverting them from their core legislative and oversight responsibilities.
In a letter to the President dated the 20th of May 2025, the Center stresses that the decision risks deepening existing inequalities, as such funds may not be distributed or utilized equitably.
CENPOA is therefore urging the President to rescind the policy decision and instead channel the cumulative amount of GH 55.2 million cedis to more appropriate projects such as
Provision of fully resourced constituency offices to enable MPs to effectively engage with their constituents and carry out their parliamentary duties.
Strengthening the District Education Offices with logistics, training, and infrastructure support to sustainably improve education delivery at the local level.
Enhancing the GETFund and existing educational structures that already have the capacity and mandate to carry out development projects.
