Stakeholders in the East Gonja Municipality have called for the revival of community volunteerism to improve sanitation, especially in rural areas where infrastructure remains limited.
They believe that restoring the spirit of communal labour can help bridge the sanitation gap while fostering greater civic responsibility. Improving sanitation in Ghana, they noted, requires a multifaceted approach, including expanding access to facilities, promoting hygiene education, and strengthening waste management systems.
In support of this effort, Choice Ghana, in collaboration with the East Gonja Municipal Assembly, organized a cleanup exercise in Salaga to complement government initiatives.
Issahaku Hafisu, Presiding Member of the East Gonja Municipal Assembly, reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to sanitation campaigns.
“As assembly members, we are key partners in addressing sanitation issues. That’s why we are here in our numbers to support this initiative by Choice Ghana and Star Ghana,” he said.
“Communal labour has been missing in recent years, and with support from our people, we will work to keep our electoral areas clean.“
Mohammed Seidu, Executive Director of Choice Ghana, urged residents to embrace volunteerism.
“When we try to mobilize communities, many say others are being paid to clean, which has worsened sanitation. That’s why Star Ghana is reactivating community-led action.“
He highlighted a lack of basic tools—such as brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows, and waste collection trucks—as a major challenge.
Municipal Chief Executive Yazid Kassim Rabiu pledged that the assembly would prioritize sanitation.
“We will enact by-laws that suit our local context and engage stakeholders to find holistic solutions.”
President John Mahama, during his recent tour of the Greater Accra Region, emphasized that cleanliness would become a key performance indicator for all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
