Businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo has donated GHS500,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, to help ease the financial burden of chronic illness treatment for Ghanaians.
The donation fulfills a pledge made during the fund’s official launch by President John Dramani Mahama.
The MahamaCares Fund is a major national health initiative focused on covering treatment for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) not currently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It also aims to improve health infrastructure, specialist training, and medical research.
Representing Alive Industries at the cheque presentation, Alhaji Agongo highlighted the urgent need for support, especially for dialysis patients who often face unbearable costs—up to GHS8,400 per month—just to stay alive.
“I see their faces every day—mothers selling everything for treatment, fathers choosing between feeding their families or staying alive. These are choices no Ghanaian should face,” he said emotionally.
Drawing from his experience as the owner of a dialysis center, Agongo cited a Global Payroll Association report estimating each dialysis session at GHS800. With three sessions weekly, most patients face an average monthly cost of $800—higher than Ghana’s average income of $750.
Health Minister Mintah Kwabena Akandoh, who received the cheque, described the donation as more than a corporate gesture.
“This is Ghanaians standing for Ghanaians,” he said. “Agongo reminds us that the heart of leadership is compassion.”
Agongo, who also owns Agricult, emphasized that business success is meaningless in a nation where preventable deaths persist. He urged other well-meaning individuals to step forward.
“This isn’t about wealth—it’s about care,” he said. “Together, we can be the reason someone gets another chance at life.”
