The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has admitted it does not have enough relief items to support all the victims affected by the torrential rains that hit parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18.
Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise show, Samuel Aboagye, NADMO’s Deputy Director General in charge of Protocol and Relief, revealed that while their teams are actively assessing the damage and offering aid, the current stock of relief supplies is limited.
“Our teams are on the ground assessing the situation. If 10, 50, or 100 people are critically affected, we will assist them first. If the items are not enough, we’ll seek support from the district assemblies and the head office,” he stated.
Mr. Aboagye confirmed that more than 3,000 people have been displaced by the flooding, which also claimed four lives—one in Abokobi and three in Adenta.
The heavy downpour, which lasted nearly three hours from around 3:00 p.m., caused severe flooding in multiple communities including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, and parts of Tema. Roads were blocked, and many vehicles were stranded.
Despite predicting heavier rainfall this season, Mr. Aboagye said NADMO had prepared for emergencies. However, he pleaded with the public for patience.
“Please bear with us when you don’t get the relief items on time. We are managing what we have.”
He reassured Ghanaians that NADMO teams are still in affected communities, registering displaced individuals and planning further support.
Mr. Aboagye also urged the public to stay vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas during storms.
“Let me use this opportunity to urge everyone to be alert and ready during this rainy season. Safety must come first,” he emphasized.
