The Deputy Director in Charge of Technical at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ahmed-Rufai Bolas, has called for a demolition exercise in certain areas of Accra to improve drainage and mitigate flooding.
This comes after heavy rainfall on Sunday, May 18, 2025, which severely affected residents and highlighted the poor state of the drainage systems.
During a visit to the affected areas, properties were seen overwhelmed with floodwater, with residents using buckets to scoop out water from their homes.
NADMO officials expressed concern over the poor drainage system, which exacerbated the flooding.
The heavy downpour resulted in significant property damage. Ahmed-Rufai Bolas emphasized that the drainage systems need urgent attention and called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to undertake a demolition exercise to clear the way for better water flow.

This, he believes, would reduce the impact of future flooding.
“We’ve realized that the drainage needs distilling. Others constructed a slap for easy access for vehicular movement, but it was too low to the point that when water is flowing, it hits it and gets back.
“Yesterday when our men came to the field they couldn’t identify whether there was a slum up here, the whole place was full. Covered with water. It got to a time we even needed to bring a boat to this place. We are advising and suggesting to the AMA that some demolition needs to be done within this community,” Mr Bolas urged.
Meanwhile, residents have also expressed their concerns and frustrations about the situation.
