A heavy downpour on Sunday afternoon, May 18, triggered widespread flooding across several parts of Accra and Tema West, once again exposing the capital’s vulnerability to extreme weather events.
The rainfall, which began around 3:00 p.m. and lasted nearly three hours, submerged roads and communities in Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, East Legon, and Adjei-Kojo Kanewu in the Tema West Municipality, leaving commuters stranded and homes inundated.
One of the worst-hit areas was the Awudome Roundabout stretch through to Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, where floodwaters rendered the road impassable and caused multiple vehicles to break down.
Jaw-dropping video footage captures the aftermath of Sunday’s heavy downpour in Accra, showing extensive damage as properties and cars lie submerged in floodwaters at East Legon Hills.

Local youth were seen assisting drivers and preventing accidents involving open drains and hidden potholes.
In response, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) dispatched emergency teams following numerous distress calls from residents in affected areas.
“So far, we have received many distress calls—residents in Adenta, Tema, and around Kaneshie calling for help—but no casualty as I am talking to you now,” said Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro on Channel One TV.
Like clockwork, Accra floods every year. Yes, the system is flawed, but let’s face it: developers who build anywhere and residents who throw trash down the drains are contributing factors. All of us are inside. It’s time to clean up this mess.#AccraFloods #Ghana pic.twitter.com/T2dpSYIEaI
