
In a remarkable achievement, Ghana’s Joseph Taylor, a 19-year-old freshman at Duke University, has rewritten Ghana’s athletics history by shattering the men’s 400m national record.
At the 2025 ACC Outdoor Championships in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Taylor clocked an impressive 44.98s to win the race, surpassing the previous record of 45.13s set by Ibrahim Hassan in 1996.
Taylor’s record-breaking run not only made him the first Ghanaian athlete to dip under the 45-second mark in the quarter-mile event but also qualified him for the upcoming World Athletics Championships.
This outstanding performance solidifies Taylor’s position as one of Ghana’s rising athletic stars, and his achievement is sure to inspire a new generation of Ghanaian athletes.
