The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced the re-nomination of four Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) by President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended.
This was contained in a press release dated May 15, 2025, and signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim.
The nominees are expected to be vetted and approved by their respective Assemblies.
Ignatius Godfred Dordoe – Shai Osudoku District Assembly
Rudolph Collingwoode-Williams – Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly
Michael Mensah – Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly
Alfredos Nii Anyetei – La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly
All these four nominees were included in the earlier nomination announced by the President but were voted against by the assembly members, the reason they have been re-nominated.
The Shai Osudoku District Assembly rejected Mr Ignatius Godfred Dordoe leading to his re-nomination. He was unable to secure the required votes needed for him to be elected.
Rudolph Collingwoode-Williams, the nominee for Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly and Michael Mensah, nominee for Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly were both rejected by assembly members after failing to secure the mandatory two-thirds to qualify them as the elected MCEs for the respective Assemblies.
Mr Mensah the nominee for Ayawaso West secured only nine votes out of the total of 19 members who voted while Mr Collingwoode-Williams of Ayawaso Central polled six votes out of the 17 members who voted.
On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Alfredos Nii Anyetei was rejected by La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly (Ladma). The assembly refused to give Mr Anyetei the endorsement. Only five of the 14 assembly members of Ladma votes “Yes” while nine opposed his nomination.
He failed to garner the needed 2/3 majority of votes to be confirmed as MCE.
On May 7, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo at a press conference called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) aspirants to desist from instigating assembly members to vote against the President’s MMDCE nominees.
She said if other shortlisted aspirants think rejecting the president’s nominee would give them the opportunity to be nominated, then it was not going to happen.
“You should not instigate people not to vote for the Presidential nominees by disgracing the president, if you think your name is shortlisted so you will be appointed, then it’s a lie.
We’ll make sure that if you don’t vote for the nominee, those shortlisted will also not be appointed, even, if we have to re-appoint someone, we’ll go outside the box to do that,” she cautioned.
