The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor has disclosed that the Ghana Water Company has not made any payment of electricity bills in the last 7 months.
The Minister made the disclosure at a meeting between the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy and other agencies in the energy sector on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
John Jinapor insisted that ECG must collect these monies owed by the Ghana Water Company as the energy sector is currently grappling with challenges.
“The other note is that Ghana Water hasn’t paid even GHS 1 for seven months. We need that money to stabilize the power, if you don’t pay one cedi for seven months and it compounds to GHC1 billion, the power sector will not be stable.
“The private sector or ordinary citizens alone cannot be called upon to shoulder the burden,” he said.
The Minister noted that these monies are needed to stabilize power in the sector as taxpayer’s money alone is insufficient to run the sector.
“The water is produced, the water is sold, ECG must collect the money and as a Minister, I insist that ECG must collect the money. The taxpayer’s money should not be used to subsidize ECG’s inability to collect the monies,” Jinapor stated.
The Minister further painted a precarious state of the fuel supply to the energy sector, cautioning that only about 2 days of fuel reserves is left.
He said the Ministry has procured more fuel on credit and yet to receive monies from the Finance Ministry to pay.
“As I sit here my headache is how to get the next level of fuel. The fuel we have will take us 2.6 days, we have placed order for fuel and it has to be paid. We procured some fuel on credit and we are working with the Ministry of Finance to pay but the truth is that the Ministry of Finance has it limit so we are going to Cabinet to discuss how we can improve on the sector,” he added.
