To strengthen epidemic intelligence through data sharing to enhance cross-border surveillance, Health Medical Research and Timely Response, Ghana and the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC) have signed a data sharing agreement.
The agreement will ensure a data sharing platform for member states that links public health institutions in each country to improve health outcomes
Africa Centre for Disease Control, (CDC) has played a pivotal role in bridging Ghana’s Ministry of Health with key development partners and continental health initiatives.
It has been a steadfast ally in shaping the country’s health policies and programs through technical support and supporting significantly an upgrade of the country’s capacity to manage public health emergencies.
For decades, data sharing has been the pivotal point of key initiatives led by the Africa CDC in partnership with African Union member states with which Ghana belongs.
Discussions regarding the agreement began with the country’s sector minister during the previous administration. The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during the official signing of the agreement ceremony in Accra noted the significance of the platform.
‘‘Your visit is a testament to the strong partnership between Africa CDC and our nation. A partnership that has been instrumental in advancing our shared vision for a healthier, more resilient Africa. Today, we gather not only to celebrate our achievements but also to reaffirm our commitment to Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, a bold blueprint for sustainable development, health security, and self-reliance,” Mr Akandoh noted.
He further outlined Ghana’s Commitment to Agenda 2063 & Home-Grown Solutions.
‘‘While we are deeply grateful for Africa CDC’s support, Ghana is also taking bold steps toward self-reliance, in alignment with Agenda 2063’s vision of a prosperous, integrated, and people-centered Africa.
Ghana is playing a leadership role in advancing health security in the region. As Chair of the Western Regional Steering Committee (ReSCO), we are working to provide strategic oversight for regional coordination efforts.’’
Director-General of Africa CDC, Dr. Jean Kaseya would want African leaders to engage in a more collaborative effort to ensure development is enhanced within the region devoid of Western support.
The AU Health Information Exchange (HIE) and the Central Data Repository (CDR) will optimize the flow of health data across Africa.
