Energy Minister assures power supply will be stabilised by end of May

The Minister of Green Energy Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor says the current challenges facing the country’s power sector will be resolved by the end of May.

John Jinapor noted that scheduled maintenance works are being carried out across the thermal plants nationwide which is the reason for the destruction in continuous power supply.

Speaking to TV3 on May 9, 2025, John Jinapor emphasized the need for urgent maintenance works that had been postponed by the previous administration.

He assured that after the maintenance works by end of May, the country will experience long-term stability in power supply.

“What has come to light is that a lot of thermal plants that were supposed to go for regular maintenance in 2024 for some reason the government then decided not to do that.

“As we go through this maintenance, it will create some destruction, it is for the good of it. We need to do that so the plants will be strong and resilient.

“What I get is that within the month of May, they will do a lot of this maintenance and in June we will do some minimal maintenance so after the month of May when they are done with the maintenance, barring any unforeseen circumstance, we should be seeing a much more improved sector,” he stated.

John Jinapor noted that it is critical for the maintenance works to be undertaken as many of Ghana’s power plants have surpassed their operating hours.

“These are plants that have gone far beyond their maximum operating hours. So, as a responsible government, we have to undertake the servicing.

“What I have realised is that if you hold them back for too long, you will compromise the integrity of the plant. So I want to appeal to Ghanaians that as we take this step, we will do everything within our power to reduce the impact, it is a necessary step,” he added.

The Minister assured that government will do whatever it takes to ensure the reliable supply of power and maintain the system.
