Nollywood star, Funke Akindele has opened up about how she overcame cyberbullying and how it affected her mental health.
In an emotional conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo on his Live Talk show, Akindele talked about the toll social media criticism took on her despite her positive public image.
The mother of twin explained that a number of factors including her mother’s passing, political criticism, and mockery about her broken marriage caused her to experience mental health issues.
Akindele acknowledged that she had always made an effort to remain resilient in the face of difficulty, but the pressure of being judged by others was too much.
“I was dying in silence because I was acting strong,” she said. “Every time I showed strength, they threw more at me—at home, from family, at work, in society. You’re the role model for a lot of people out there.”
But she was reluctant to seek therapy although she believed it could heal her mentally – —fearing judgment or being misunderstood.
“I thought people would talk about me. People would know my business,” she confessed.
However, she took a bold decision to seek therapy after she broke down in tears after seeing a video that made fun of her lack of a husband.
“I cried and cried and cried. Then I told myself, you need to speak to someone about this. You can’t continue like this,” she shared.
She began to regain her emotional stability after she begun seeing her therapist.
“When I started speaking to a therapist, I felt better…Things I couldn’t tell people out there, I spoke to my therapist. And I’m better. She said, emphasizing the importance of mental health support. “It’s very important for you to speak up. Yes.”
