Galamsey activities have taken a twist in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.
According to local reports, four people have been confirmed dead in galamsey pits in the area in the month of April alone. The sad incidents happened in Ankra, Essase, and recently at Sampa. The reports indicated that the victims slipped and fell into a dam dug for their mining activities.
The activity of the illegal miners not only results in the loss of lives, but also water bodies, lands, cocoa farms, and vegetation are destroyed.
Confirming the sad incidents to Onua TV, the Sefwi Akontombra Police Commander, ASP Samuel Atta, said the Police in the area are putting in all efforts to bring the galamsey menace under control. He further outlined the measures that have been put in place to stop the operations of the illegal miners.
Meanwhile, some residents speaking to Onua News passionately appealed to the government to swiftly intervene as the illegal miners are destroying the water bodies and lands in the district.
Close sources revealed that the miners have some strong political influences in their activity, which has made the fight against galamsey in the Akontombra District a difficult one.
