President John Dramani Mahama has announced his intention to bar foreign movies from being aired on the presidential jet.
The President made this declaration in proclamation of his unwavering support for the Ghanaian movie industry.
Speaking at the launch of the “Black Star Experience” at the Black Stars Square on May 1, 2025, President Mahama disclosed that while he was President in his first term, he gave the same directive.
He noted that the presidential jet is currently being serviced but he will issue the directive once the plane has been returned.
“I remember as a young student in Legon, we had our little drama studio, and our students as part of their exams had to do choreography for a drama performance. And we had to pay for their performances. They did very well because of their beautiful African performances… I remember I asked they don’t show foreign films on the presidential jet anymore and that we should watch Ghanaian movies.
“This was when I was president before and I am going to give the directive again. The plane has gone for servicing and when it comes I will tell them to change all foreign movies and put Ghanian ones,” he said.
President Mahama also recounted an interesting Kumawood movie he watched concerning LilWin and Van Vicker during his tenure.
“I watch a very interesting one between LilWin and Van Vicker. When some armed robbers attacked Van Vicker… LilWin and his wife found him lying down. His wife quizzed where he came from and LilWin noted that he was a white man who had fallen from a plane. These are interesting, we have the talent,” he added.
