President Mahama has urged public sector workers of state institutions not to remain silent when heads of these enterprises mismanage the companies.
Delivering a speech on May Day at the Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama charged public workers to be bold and call out their bosses who mismanage state institutions.
The President declared his support for individuals who would not be afraid to speak up about atrociously managed state enterprises.
“Comrades and friends, many of you have been working in atrociously managed state institutions over the last years. I urge you not to keep quiet when management is driving your enterprise into ruin. You are always the first to be affected by job losses when these institutions collapse.
“Your enterprise where you work belongs to you, they guarantee you lifelong employment and so you must protect those enterprises. When things are going wrong do not be afraid to say so and as President, I will back and support you to set things right.
“And so we are charging the management and workers of state-owned institutions, let us work together to make these institutions viable because they belong to all of us,” the President stressed.
President Mahama assured workers in the public sector that his government will walk its talk, stand by workers through hardship and prosperity.
He noted that his government his committed not only to improving conditions of service but also to restoring hope and confidence in the Ghanaian workforce.
The President hinted of plans to institute reforms to improve conditions of service for private and public sector workers.
“We will introduce comprehensive reforms across the public and private sector labour environment by ensuring timely salary payment, modernizing workplace conditions and reducing the bureaucratic bottlenecks that frustrates your productivity,” John Mahama stated.
Addressing concerns about inequitable disparity in public service wage, the President said: “And this is the reason why as part of the Constitution review, attention will be given to the establishment of an independent emolument commission that will determine a fair and equitable public wage structure so that we can bridge the unacceptable gap between the conditions of services of Article 71 office holders and other sections of workers within the public sector.”
