President Mahama has directed the Road Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza to design and construct the bridge from Ekye-Amanfrom to Adowso over the Afram river under his flagship Big Push agenda.
Construction of the 3.6 kilometer bridge and over a 100 kilometer of roads has failed twice as previous government was unable to operationalize its construction to open up the Afram plains linking three regions; Eastern, Ashanti and Oti.
Government says the design will be localized with an effective cost to aid agriculture and the establishment of the satellite campus of the university of environment and sustainable development.
The Minister disclosed this during a tour of the bridge on Monday, April 28, 2025.
“Two attempts have been made so far to get that bridge done so far it did not materialize. He (President Mahama) has instructed that under the Big Push, this bridge would have to be done to connect the South and the North as you can see. The potentials are great.
“We should delploy the best possible design that is efficient and cheaper and then the consultant who would be responsible for this would make sure that the quality of work that will be done will outlive us and give us value in what we want to do in this area,” the Minister stated.
The Roads Minister is optimistic that the bridge will be constructed and completed before President Mahama’s tenure ends.
“We can do this. If in the course of next year, things get better we can get support from somewhere but even without that we are going to start because in any case if we have all the money, it’s going to take us two to three years to be able to start and finish,” he said.
