Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzie Tamakloe, has called for calm amidst growing public debate over the impeachment petition and suspension OF the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey, Tamakloe emphasized that open discussion is a hallmark of democratic societies but stressed that all conversations must happen within the boundaries of the law.
“Democracy allows for noise-making,” Tamakloe said, “but it also demands that noise is channeled legally and responsibly.”
He reminded citizens that transparency and probity are fundamental principles under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, and that public criticism, while necessary, must respect legal frameworks.
He praised the role of professional associations such as the Ghana Bar Association and commended them for speaking out but cautioned that all stakeholders must stay within constitutional limits.
He applauded President John Mahama’s handling of the impeachment petition against the Chief Justice, describing it as a demonstration of “grace, dignity, and fairness.”
According to Tamakloe, the President’s actions from acknowledging the petition to forwarding it to the Council of State without bias or interference, reflect his deep respect for constitutional processes.
“President Mahama’s conduct has been so exemplary that even the Ghana Bar Association, known for challenging presidential decisions, when necessary, has found no fault with his actions,” Tamakloe remarked on April 26.
Highlighting Mahama’s long political career from Member of Parliament to President, Tamakloe said his experience uniquely positions him to navigate sensitive constitutional matters without political interference.
“So far, so good,” Tamakloe concluded, urging the public to trust in the president’s leadership during this critical time.
