The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is actively working to extend the student loan scheme to include students in private tertiary institutions.
He believes this move will bring significant relief to many students who struggle financially to access higher education.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new Board for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in Accra on April 25, Haruna Iddrisu stated, “Government is considering expanding the student loan scheme to all deserving students in the country, whether in public or private institutions.”
He added that a physical assessment is already underway to evaluate the feasibility of this expansion. “Once the assessment is completed, a decision will be made. After all, this is a loan, and it will be repaid,” he emphasized.
He also revealed plans to introduce a new scholarship bill aimed at aligning educational support with the country’s long-term development goals.
“In line with the President’s vision, I intend to introduce a new scholarship bill. During a ministerial meeting yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan shared a perspective that our scholarship policies should prioritize national future needs,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of focusing on Science, Mathematics, and Engineering education. “We want to train our best minds in these areas and provide them with comprehensive support through the new scholarship scheme,” the Minister noted.
The proposed measures form part of a broader strategy to enhance access to higher education and ensure national development through targeted investment in key academic fields.
