Asante Kotoko legend George Kennedy has strongly refuted claims that the appointment of Karim Zito as the club’s interim coach and technical director was influenced by the club’s former players.
Reports had suggested that Zito’s return to Kotoko where he once played was orchestrated by the club’s old guards.
However, Kennedy, who serves as President of the Kotoko Old Players Association, insists the Interim Management Committee (IMC) made the decision independently.
Speaking in an interview with Akoma FM, Kennedy dismissed any suggestion that the legends were behind Zito’s hiring.
“That’s not true. As I’ve said before, the club’s management handles its own affairs. They consult us only when they see the need to, and we can’t impose anything on them. Yes, we do engage from time to time, but in the case of Zito, we were not informed.”
He clarified that while Zito had personally reached out to him to share that discussions were ongoing with the club, no formal communication came from the IMC regarding his appointment.
“It was Karim Zito himself who told me that Kotoko had contacted him and that things were progressing. I wished him well and assured him of my support.”
Karim Zito is no stranger to the Porcupine Warriors. He played for Kotoko between 1978 and 1986, later joining Kumapim Stars. His impressive performances during that era earned him a place in the Black Stars from 1980 to 1984.
With his return to Kotoko as interim head coach, Zito steps into familiar territory this time with the responsibility of reviving the club’s season.
