Asante Kotoko icon George Kennedy has thrown his full support behind newly appointed interim coach and technical advisor, Karim Zito, describing him as a “game changer” capable of steering the club toward silverware this season.
Kennedy believes Zito has what it takes to guide Kotoko to both the Ghana Premier League title and FA Cup success, but he also admits that immediate solutions are needed to address the team’s inconsistent form.
The former Kotoko midfielder acknowledged the frustration among fans and club management, which ultimately led to the exit of head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum following a 2-0 defeat to Nations FC—a loss that left the Porcupine Warriors six points behind leaders Bibiani Gold Stars with six games remaining.
Despite the gap, Kennedy remains optimistic. Speaking to Akoma FM, he emphasized that the title race is far from over.
“Looking at Coach Zito’s credentials, I believe he can achieve it. There are six matches left, and winning all gives us 18 points. That’s a big difference. It’s not over yet.”
He highlighted Zito’s impact at Dreams FC—where he led the club to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup—as evidence of his ability to turn things around with the right support.
“Zito is a game changer. With his experience and what he did with Dreams FC in Africa, I believe he can replicate that success here. He just needs the backing and resources to succeed.”
Kennedy also called on the Kotoko players to adopt a fresh mindset under Zito and approach the remaining games with unity and renewed energy.
“Six points is just two matches. If Gold Stars drop points and we win, we close the gap. The players must reset, avoid injuries, and understand there’s a new coach now. They need a new attitude and belief to make this mission possible.”
With the clock ticking on the 2024/25 season, Kotoko’s next big test will be at home against Aduana Stars on April 27, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Should Zito manage to ignite a late-season revival, Kotoko could still be in the hunt for their 26th league title.
