After an eight-year legal battle, former COCOBOD CEO Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni is finally free, and he is giving all thanks to God.
The High Court’s acquittal of Dr. Opuni last month marked the end of a long legal ordeal, one that the former COCOBOD boss says only deepened his faith.
Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni has expressed profound gratitude to God for his recent acquittal, as he joined the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Emmanuel Congregation at Dormaa-Babianeha his hometown in the Bono Region to fellowship and give thanks on Easter Sunday, marking not just the resurrection of Christ but also a new chapter in his own life.
He was accompanied to church by his family members, the Bono Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by its Chairman, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo; Members of Parliament (MPs); Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs); Constituency executives and party faithful, where they offered thanks, praises and adoration to God for delivering him from the hands of his enemies.
“This victory is not mine alone, it is the Lord’s doing. For eight long years, my family and I endured this trial, but through it all, my faith has been strengthened. Today, as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, I also celebrate God’s deliverance in my life,” he emphasized.
The former COCOBOD CEO was accused of financial malfeasance during his tenure at COCOBOD. But in a landmark ruling, the court found that the state failed to prove its case, clearing him of all charges.
Even during his legal battles, Dr. Opuni never stopped giving back to his society. He has been funding the construction of school buildings, and he is yet to commence one at the very school his late mother attended to be a tribute to her legacy and his commitment to education.
He issued a strong caution against slander, urging people to refrain from false accusations that can ruin lives.
“Let us be mindful of our words. False accusations and slander can destroy lives and families. We must uphold truth and justice in all things,” he said.
Dr. Opuni also took the opportunity to reflect on his time as the head of the cocoa sector during President Mahama’s earlier four-year term. He compared it to the state of the cocoa sector under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s eight-year term, stating that he believes the sector is currently suffering.
He urged the people of Ghana to judge for themselves and make their own conclusions about the state of the cocoa sector. With his faith renewed, Dr. Opuni is determined to continue serving God and making a positive impact on society.
