For years, the women and children of Abenase in Ejisu Municipality have experienced the daily struggle of waking up at dawn to trek long distances and join long queues for water.
Hours were lost waiting in line at boreholes and streams, with heavy buckets carried back home under the scorching sun.
But now, the sound of gushing taps inside homes is replacing the old routine.
While Ghana has made significant progress in improving water access, many rural areas, including Abenase, have remained underserved – until now.
Now, in a major step forward, local authorities have not only provided the community with water systems but are extending pipelines directly to households; bringing hope, convenience, and better health.
This move aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal Six, which promises clean and affordable water for all by 2030.
But for the people of Abenase, this isn’t just about policy; it’s about transforming lives.
“We no longer waste time walking miles just to fetch water. Our children can go to school on time, and we have more hours to work and take care of our families,” said Abena Nyarko, a lifelong resident.
“The water is clean, and our children are healthier. This is the kind of development we’ve been praying for,” added Mary Owusu, another beneficiary.
A Collaborative Effort
The project began when the Chief of Abenase, Nana Dr Akuoko Boateng commissioned several boreholes to address the water shortage. Building on this, Assemblyman Adom Saahene and his unit committee secured additional funding to expand the network directly to households.
“Our goal is to reach at least 80% of the 17,000 residents by the end of 2025. This is just the beginning—we want every home in Abenase to have reliable water access,” Saahene stated.
As Abenase residents adjust to this newfound convenience, the ripple effects—improved health, education, and economic productivity—promise to reshape the community for years to come.
