A young man who attempted to steal a cable at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation at Adoato in the Ashanti Region, has lost his life.
Reports say he is part of a group of young men who have been stealing power cables in the region.
The young man identified to be in his late thirties was electrocuted in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, when he attempted to steal an earth wire (cable) at the ECG substation located at Adoato near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Greater Kumasi.
The incident which resulted in an outage to a lot of customers within Greater Kumasi and beyond is gradually becoming rampant in the Ashanti Region.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Substation of the ECG, Collins Manu, said this grim incident is just one in a long list of tragedies since 2014.
He revealed that at least 133 individuals have lost their lives attempting to steal electrical cables from the Electricity Company of Ghana.
“Cable theft is more than just an illegal act, it is a reckless gamble with life and a direct assault on communities relying on stable electricity. Every stolen cable disrupts homes, businesses, and critical services, plunging entire neighborhoods into darkness and costing ECG millions in repairs,”he stated.
According to him, “Lately, vandalizing of ECG transformers, cables, protective equipment and other installations needed for stable power supply has been on the rise in the Ashanti Region with recent acts at the same Adoato Substation, Adum Central Business District among others”.
Mr Manu warned the public about the dire consequences of tampering with live electrical installations.
“Beyond personal danger, cable theft threatens economic stability, slows development, and burdens taxpayers with unnecessary costs,” he lamented.
He said safeguarding Ghana’s electrical infrastructure is a shared responsibility.
“The public must remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and discourage any attempts at cable theft,” the PRO urged.
Mr Manu cautioned the general public especially those involved in this illegal activity to desist from it.
