As the world celebrates International Women’s Day every March 8, the Canadian High Commission in Ghana is leading a transformative agenda to encourage more young persons especially girls to take up courses and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The High Commission is concerned the representation of women in many professional sectors, such as coding, mining and welding, is still very low .
Also in Sub-Saharan Africa, only 30 percent of science and technology graduates are women.
The seeming lack of women’s full and equal participation in science and technology as students, influencers, professionals, decision-makers and leaders negatively, is affecting gender equality in Ghana.
To this end, the Canadian High Commission will on Saturday March 9, 2019 host an event at the Ahantaman Girls SHS at Ketan near Sekondi in the Western region to empower young girls and boys from about 15 junior and senior high schools on broadening their career horizons towards STEM.
This event will take the form of a career fair showcasing women role models in STEM and will permit young girls and boys, their parents as well as guardians to interact and ask questions about career paths, opportunities and advantages of choosing a profession in STEM.
Careers that will be showcased include: mining, armed forces, welding, health sector, coding, and many more. In all, about 16 career organisations will be exhibiting at the fair.
A scheduled music concert with a performance from music legend, Okyeame Kwame will also convey messages from high level stakeholders on the importance of empowering girls and boys and the continuing effort to promote gender equality in Ghana.
Dignitaries gracing the occasion will include the High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, H.E. Dr. Heather Cameron, the Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area, and Nana Kobina Nketsia V, as well as senior representatives of the Government of Ghana, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Air Forces, Ghana Navy, Ghana Health Service, and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”.
