Former president John Mahama has condemned the shooting incident at the Ashanti regional office of the National Democratic Congress and has called on the police to arrest the culprits.
One person lost his life with several others sustaining injuries when members of pro-NDC vigilante group – The Hawks – clashed during a meeting of party executives at the office. The police have placed four members of the Hawks on their wanted list.
Mahama in a Facebook post said: “I have just been briefed about a shooting incident that occurred in front of the Ashanti Regional Office of the NDC leading to the death of one person and injury to another.”
“I strongly condemn this incident. It is clearly a criminal act, and I call on the police and relevant security agencies to investigate, immediately apprehend the culprits and subject them to the full rigours of the law,” the NDC flagbearer hopeful said.
Meanwhile, the government has condemned the shooting incident.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a statement condemned the act.
“Government expresses condolences to the bereaved family, wishes the injured a speedy recovery and urges the Police to speed up investigations to bring the perpetrators to book,” Nkrumah stated.
He added: “Government reiterates that violence should be eschewed from all spheres of our national life. Citizens and Groups are further encouraged to desist from actions that create a state of insecurity in our nation.”
