The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has stepped up surveillance across critical shopping centres and major markets across the country
The move has become necessary as several shops are stocking all kinds of products in anticipation of the annual boom in Christmas sales.
The Yuletide also provides a breeding ground for unscrupulous traders to find loopholes to bring in expired and substandard products.
Such products are either produced or packaged here in Ghana with false labels or imported through unapproved entry points.
Several unsuspecting customers who fall victim to these dodgy sales end up with raw deals or in worst cases find their merchandize contaminated.
Speaking to Ultimate News, the Ashanti regional director of the Food and Drugs Authority Nora Tei Larbi in the Ashanti region assured her outfit has stepped up its surveillance in all commercial zones across the Ashanti region to detect and rid the shelves of all such harmful products.”
She told reporter Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “Within this season, we have officers in the markets going into shops and market stalls making sure that whatever products are displayed for sale, are within their good shelf life,. We are also ensuring that dented and bloated canned products, damaged bottles and damaged packages and all those things are not on sale.”
Nora Tei Larby however pointed out that in as much as the FDA is committed to policing the market, the onus remains on the public to be circumspect and extra vigilant in looking out for red flags on every product they spend their cash. purchasing.
