A study suggests that eating ice cream the moment you wake up can actually be beneficial for the brain.
Eating a high sugar diet early in the morning may be the worst fears of many people. But a study suggests that eating ice cream the moment you wake up can actually be beneficial for the brain.
The study, published by Kyorin University professor Yoshihiko Koga, said eating ice cream first thing in the morning can result in improved instances of alertness and mental performance.
Subjects in an experiment carried out by the professor had to eat three spoonfuls of ice cream first thing in the morning.

They then had to use a computer to complete a number of mental exercises, Excite News reports.
Professor Koga found the people who had eaten ice cream had faster reaction times and were better at processing information than a separate group that had not had any breakfast.
Their brain waves were also measured during the experiment and this showed that the people who had an ice cream first thing in the morning had an increase in high-frequency alpha waves, which are associated with higher levels of alertness and can reduce mental irritation.

Professor Koga then tried the same experiment with cold water to find out if the ice cream’s temperature was simply shocking the subjects awake.
Nevertheless, while people who had drunk the cold water did show some level of increased mental performance and alertness, the effect was not as pronounced as with the ice cream.
Meanwhile, more research may have to be conducted to thoroughly determine what specific ingredient in ice cream could be responsible for the mental boost.
