Lily, Adom, Nana & Gabriel: These four kids are ready to make Ghana proud at the Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway and Ghanaian spellers Lily Tugbah, Nana Addo, Adom Appiah and Gabriel Ennin want nothing less than a win.

Lily Ama Tugbah is Ghana’s Spelling Bee champion. Her win meant a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and Lily is in the United States of America to represent Ghana.

But Lily is not alone.

 

There are three other Ghanaian kids who are in the competition.

Nana Addo of Dakota Dunes, Adom Appiah, a seventh-grade student at the Spartanburg Day School Gabriel Ennin who has been king of Spelling Bee in Lancaster for the past two years and Adom Appiah were the other Ghanaians to join Lily.

Adom and Addo who are both in the United States of America did not meet until they got to the Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. However, parents of the kids who live in South Carolina and South Dakota respectively are friends.

 

Nana Addo talks about how nice it felt not to be alone when he booked his place and heard Adom was coming too.

“It’s nice knowing I was going to know somebody there. I’m not all alone,” the student of Dakota Dunes said.

Adom is optimistic about the competition. The seventh grader wants to tie with Nana Ado and have fun on a tour.

“We’re going to tie. We have to tie. We’re tying, then we’re going on tour.”

 

Lily Tugbah and Gabriel Ennin also have plans, and it is to make Ghana proud.

“It's a really great honor … I plan on doing everything possible to make Ghana proud,” Lily’s promise before she left Ghana.

Having qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee for a second consecutive year, Ennin cannot be underrated.
