Mr Ofosu Ampofo, newly elected Nat’l Chairman, NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voted for the establishment of a Special National Conference which will be the platform for the party to discuss and amend proposals to the party’s constitution.
Currently, discussions of proposed constitutional amendments are done at the party’s National Delegates Congress which is also used to elect national executive members, which critics say, have not been efficient over the years.
The establishment of the Special National Conference thus decouples the election of national executives from the consideration of proposed constitutional amendments and adoption of same.
At the ninth National Delegates Congress of the NDC held at the Trades Fair Centre in Accra, a viva voce voting was used by delegates to amend the constitution.
The party said most of their congress have been criticised for not setting agenda for critical examination and implementation of policies to push the party forward.
It said it is against that backdrop the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party has introduced the special national conference.
The special national conference, the party explained, shall have the same powers as the National Delegates Congress.
It will be the platform for the NDC to discuss policy issues affecting the development and direction of the party particularly the policies and programmes, consider audited accounts and approve creation of integral organs.
The NEC will determine the selection of delegates, persons qualified to attend congress and the NEC shall take cognisance of various stakeholder interests in the party,
On when the special national congress will be convened, the date will be determined by the NEC. -3news.com
