About 100,000 enterpreneurs in the informal sector across the country are to be trained in Information Communication Technology (ICT) next year to improve on their businesses.
The beneficiaries of the training would include market women, mechanics, carpenters, drivers, tailors, seamstress, hairdressers and beauticians, traders, and other artisans.
The Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication, Kofi Asante, disclosing this at an orientation session for the Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) trainees under the Digitise Ghana module, said the objective of the training was to equip the players in the informal sector with the requisite skills to enable them navigate effectively in today’s highly technological world.
About two hundred beneficiaries of the NABCo trainees under the Digitise Ghana benefited from the training to prepare them for the assignment ahead of them.
Mr Asante said the training would be done in all the GIFEC 226 Community ICT Centres across the country, which are currently undergoing massive transformation to enable them serve as community hubs for a myriad of ICT and electronic-government services.
The GIFEC Administrator said a total of 4,500 students have been trained through the GIFEC Coding for Kids Programme and 500 ICT teachers had been given adequate ICT skills to boost their capacities to enable them discharge their duties effectively.
Mr Asante disclosed that about 16,000 graduates had been employed under the Digitise Ghana module of the NABCo programme and a total of GH?14 million had been allocated by the government to pay for their salaries for the next three years.
“Undoubtedly, in this information age, most nations have achieved greatness by the application of technology to ease business, improve efficiency, cut costs, improve earnings, and increase productivity. Ghana cannot be left behind and therefore the President’s digitisation and transformation agenda will have to be pursued relentlessly from a multi-sartorial perspective to ensure the creation of robust digital economy,” he said.
He said the Digitise module, among others, offered the opportunity for the delivery of a number of the President’s flagship initiatives such as the National Identification Scheme, Land Title and Administration and Health and Safety Monitoring Solutions.
Mr Asante entreated the NABCo trainees under the Digitise Ghana module to work hard and take advantage of the opportunity to prepare them for the job market.
The NABCo National Coordinator, Bowan Mubarak, said the NABCo programme was an initiative of the President to address growing youth unemployment in the country.
He said NABCo had introduced robust key performance indicators to monitor their performance and should therefore work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them.
Mr Mubarak urged them to exhibit the values of honesty and integrity.
