Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti region observed this year’s World AIDS DAY in a grand style on Tuesday with Drama and Educational Talks. People, mostly students and school children, converged at the newly built Community Centre where various speakers gave messages on HIV and AIDS.

The Akrofuom Methodist JHS was also there with a drama on stigmatization of persons with HIV. The District Director of Health, Mr John Baffoe Yeboah, said testing for HIV was free while treatment too is free and encouraged the people to check their status.
Rev.Emmanuel Sarpong, Parish Priest of the St. Luke Parish at Akrofuom talked about stigmatization and encouraged the general public to stop such habit and that they should rather have compassion and love for anyone found to have contracted the HIV virus.
“As people we should be able to tell anyone found to have contracted the disease to go for the anti-retroviral drug and after constant and meticulous use will live normal life”, he said.

Mr. Isaac Wemegah, Public Health Nurse at the Akrofuom Health Directorate pointed out that when one gets HIV, there is medication to aid him to live normal life, but stressed that there is no cure for AIDS.
He stated further that the drug for the person with HIV is easy to take and encouraged all those with the disease to feel free to go for their medications. Mr. Wemegah expressed worry that some people who have tested positive for HIV sometimes refuse to accept the results.
Madam Matilda Afiba Akomeyeh, District Focal Person on HIV/AIDS said HIV is everywhere and that Akrofuom cannot be exempted. She urged all those who are not married and cannot abstain from sex to use condom.
