President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year re-engagement for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP. Christian Tetteh Yohuno , extending his service beyond the statutory retirement age, which he is expected to reach in December 2025.
The decision, communicated in an official letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, follows a recommendation by the Police Council and is anchored in existing laws governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service.
Per the letter, the IGP’s re-engagement takes effect from 28th December, 2025, during which he will continue to serve as the head of the Service and carry out all duties and responsibilities attached to the office.
According to the President, the extension underscores the Council’s firm belief that the IGP’s continued leadership is crucial at this moment as the Service implements major reforms, works to boost operational efficiency, and maintains institutional stability.
“The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period,” the letter stated.
The IGP has been requested to confirm acceptance of the re-engagement in writing within three days of receiving the communication.
The letter concluded with assurances of the President’s highest consideration for the IGP.
