Two men, Augustine Teye and Mathew Nakotey, have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly conspiring to traffic a large quantity of suspected narcotic drugs.
The two were charged with conspiracy to commit the unlawful control of narcotic drugs and unlawful possession of narcotics, contrary to the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
The accused, 30-year-old driver Augustine Teye and 28-year-old unemployed Mathew Nakotey were arrested on June 7, 2025 at Ayi Mensah, near Adenta in Accra.
According to police prosecutors, led by ASP Richard Amoah, the two were intercepted during a night patrol by officers from the National Operations Department of the Police Headquarters.
The police stopped a blue-black Mazda pickup with registration number GT 3490P which was being driven by Teye and occupied by Nakotey.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a significant haul of suspected narcotic substances – 118 compressed slabs of dried plant material, 36 oval-shaped parcels and four fertilizer sacks also filled with dried plant material.
The suspects reportedly confessed during initial questioning, naming one “Martey” of Teshie as the owner of the substances.
The said Martey is alleged to have contacted the officers by phone and offered a GH¢15,000 bribe in an attempt to secure the release of the suspects.
The Officers, pretending to cooperate, accepted the money as part of ongoing investigations. Martey, however, failed to appear in person and remains at large.
During formal investigations, both accused denied ownership and knowledge of the exhibits. Augustine Teye claimed he was only transporting the packages for a man in Agogo, Eastern Region and was instructed to deliver them to a recipient at the Tema Station in Accra. Mathew Nakotey, his driver’s mate, similarly denied involvement.
The seized materials have since been forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for examination.
Both accused persons pleaded not guilty in court. The presiding judge granted each of them bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, who must be civil or public servants earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly.
The case has been adjourned to July 28, 2025, for further hearing. Police are continuing investigations, with efforts underway to locate the alleged mastermind, Martey.
