Miss Amma Prempeh, a distinguished BBC journalist, producer of Ghana’s Kente feature film and granddaughter of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Wednesday partook in the traditional Awukudae observation at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The occasion also coincided with the 75th birthday celebration of the Ashanti overlord, during which royal family members and people from all walks of life thronged the Manhyia Palace to pay homage to the revered monarch of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Miss Prempeh culminated her visit with a presentation of assorted gifts to Otumfuo, which was heralded by a humorous presentation in English and Twi, which drew applause and cheers from the gathering.

These gifts, included a stunning $25,000 Jeffrey Okyere Agyei Sankofa Kente Art work, creatively woven with the symbolic Adinkra Sankofa pattern, representing the importance of learning from the past, a framed Kente documentary film poster, pictures of top four places the Kente documentary film had been screened, Kente documentary film premiere autographed booklet, the film customised T-shirts, boxes of drinks including Schnapps, Whiskey, Cognac and Champagne, as demanded by tradition and custom.
The forum provided an opportunity for Amma Prempeh to brief the Asantehene on her widely acclaimed documentary about the royal fabric, ‘Kente,’ which has been screened across the Americas and Europe.
The self-funded documentary, which delves into the origins, intricate artistry, captivating history and enduring beauty of Ghana’s iconic Kente fabric, began with its premiere in Kumasi, Ghana, on August 26, 2023 followed by a screening in Accra on September 10, 2023.
The documentary also kicked off Black History Month celebrations in Canada, with a screening at Memorial University of Newfoundland on February 3, 2025 hosted by Dr. Adjei, Associate Vice President of Indigenous Research.
On December 4, 2024 during the 19th session in Paraguay, UNESCO officially recognised Kente as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Otumfuo was all smiles throughout the presentation in appreciation of the Amma Prempeh’s accomplishments.
Amma Prempeh said she felt blessed and honoured to have been part of Asantehene’s special birthday celebrations.
