
Out of 375, 7630 candidates that sat for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), 212, 866 scored grade A-C6 in English Language, representing 57.34% and 243,904 (65.7%) secured same grades in core Mathematics.
Similarly, a total of 194, 891 (52.53%) passed Integrated Science and 238, 584 (64.31%) candidates excelled in Social Studies.
According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the results, especially Core Mathematics and English, are an improvement in the performance of candidates as against last year (2019).
Thus, the percentage of candidates that passed English language appreciated from 48.96% in 2019 to 57.34% in 2020 and Mathematics 65.31% in 2019 to 65.721% in 2020.
However, same could not be said about other core subjects like Integrated Science and Social Studies, as there was a decline in the performance of candidates as compared to last year.
In all, a total of 375, 7630 candidates from 976 schools entered for the examination, an eight percent increase over that of 2019 which stood at 34, 6098.
The 2020 entry figure was made up of 187, 581 (49.9%) males and 188,182 (50.1%) females.Interestingly, a total of 3,343 of the candidates who registered were absent from the examination.
The provisional results were contained in a press release signed by WAEC Head of Public Affairs, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe and released in Accra on Friday.
According to the release, the subject results of 2,383 candidates have been cancelled for engaging in collusion, bringing foreign materials into the examination halls and tearing parts of their question papers to solicit for assistance.
It said the entire results of 480 candidates have been cancelled for the offence of bringing mobile phones to the examination hall.
The entire results of 384 candidates have also been withheld pending the conclusion of investigation into various cases of examination malpractices detected during and after the conduct of the exams
“In the meantime, scripts of candidates from 122 schools in certain subjects are under scrutiny,” it said, adding “Withdrawal of results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.”
According to WAEC, the provisional results of candidates will be dispatched to their various schools and same will be hosted on the Council’s website at www. waecgh.org
“The Council hereby cautions all stakeholders, especially candidates, to be wary of fake results websites and the activities of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. Institutions are, therefore, urged to verify results presented to expose incidents of forgery,” WAEC warns.
