The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi East in the Western Region, Nicholas Amankwa, has reportedly been attacked by armed robbers at his residence at Wassa Akrpong.
The robbers, numbering three, invaded Amankwa’s house around 3 am on Wednesday, amid the firing of gunshots.
An eyewitness, Raymond Nana Ebbah, who was at the house of the candidate, a former District Chief Executive, told this reporter in a telephone interview that because the armed robbers targeted the room of the parliamentary candidate, he was left with no choice than to exit the room through the backdoor. He then jumped the fence wall and escaped.
Unfortunately for the robbers, they thought the parliamentary candidate was still in his room, so kept on firing until it attracted the attention of the neighbours and relatives, who came to find out what was happening.
According to the eyewitness, the youth of the town, in their attempt to overpower the robbers, rather escalated the situation as the latter kept on firing.
The resilience of the youth led to the disarming of one of the suspected robbers, but the other two managed to escape.
The arrested suspected was later handed over to the police, who had then arrived at the scene of the crime.
At the time of filing this story, the eyewitness told this reporter that they had officially made a report to the Amenfi East Police Command.
Meanwhile, in a press statement released by the Amenfi East Constituency branch of the NDC, the party said it was shocked by the attack on the parliamentary candidate.
The statement, signed by the Communication officer, Dindiego Thomas, called on the police to investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to book.
