Friday, December 16, 2016 will go into history as the day Verma Marie Annan bid the world good-bye.
Verma Annan was wrongly diagnosed of malaria by Bob Freeman Clinic in Accra and was given a double dosage of strong antimalarial drug, which attacked her RBCs and getting her in a more critical condition. Bob Freeman refused to be responsible to her again, and it was C n J Hospital who diagnosed the problem and referred her to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after recommending immediate blood transfusion.
In Korle Bu emergency ward it was business as usual and Verma was not given the required attention and was put on blood transfusion the next day.
Transferred to the ward later, the specialist was called after a whole week, when her RBCs had almost all been self-destruct. Verma had G6PD deficiency and could not have suffered from malaria, so what did Bob Freeman see in her blood?
In Korle Bu, she was put on the same strong anti-malarial drug, Coatem, which was killing her.
When she was almost dying, a young nurse saw blood oozing from her nose and nostrils, and drew the attention of the doctor on duty to it. She was asked to attend to her, without the doctor making any attempt to even look at the direction of the dying patient.
Verma passed on at age 23 with a promising life ahead of her. She had first class in Sociology, and had already founded her own NGO, the Legacy Dream Foundation, which intended to, among others, make the youth the focus of their dreams. She took on students about to write BECE and WAECE and taught them for free.
Verma was a national service person of the First Atlantic Bank. She could not make it to her graduation ceremony and died the following day, November 20, 2016.
Her post-mortem report was given to the family much, much later after persistent demands, and it was written in a form of English beyond the comprehension of many.
