Showbiz personality George Quaye has suggested that Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport be named after a prominent cultural figure rather than a politician.
In a Facebook post on Monday, he proposed names such as Kwaw Ansah, Osibisa, or Atukwei Okai International Airport.
This proposal coincides with a legal challenge filed by the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the activist group Democracy Hub. They have petitioned the Supreme Court to remove the name of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka from the airport, arguing that honouring a figure associated with the 1966 coup contradicts Ghana’s democratic values.
George Quaye’s suggestion highlights the ongoing debate over national monuments and the recognition of Ghana’s cultural and creative pioneers. Figures like Kwaw Ansah, an internationally recognized filmmaker; Osibisa, the acclaimed band that blended highlife with Afro-rock; and Atukwei Okai, a renowned poet and cultural advocate, have made significant contributions to the nation’s artistic landscape.
