Unemployed Nurses have welcomed the Ministry of Health’s move to recruit more nurses for the health sector.
They are however calling on the government to improve working conditions of nurses.
The recruitment of nurses is set to start on 1st July.
Speaking to Citi News, Batiah Sami-Ulah Santi, the former President of the Ghana Nurses and Midwife Trainees Association and a member of the unemployed nurses, called on the government to address challenges in the system for the new set of nurses.
“As we are new staff coming into the system, we will actually be glad if the government of the day is able to revise or have a better look at the conditions of service for nurses and midwives in this country,” Santi said.
He also expressed the fact that employed nurses have also voiced their concerns about the state of their salaries.
“On salaries and the condition of services for nurses, I must admit that it is not encouraging, because we know that our senior colleagues who have been in the system have been lamenting day in and out,” said Santi.
Recruitment of nurses
After months of pressure and frustration from unemployed nurses, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that nurses who received their certification between 2012-2016 should apply for recruitment starting on July 1st.
The application period for recruitment is set to commence on 1st July at 9:00 am and end on 12th July.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said all applications should be submitted online on their website.
The announcement comes after the Ghana Health Service announced in March that it will be giving 20,084 nurses financial clearance to be employed in health care institutions across the country.
