
A joint military and police team have been deployed to the Asokore Mampong Municipal Office of the Electoral Commission to maintain order following a misunderstanding between members of the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party.
The limited voter registration exercise was halted temporarily after an altercation ensued between members of both parties.
Electoral Officers subsequently returned to the registration centre after they left the scene during the misunderstanding.EC officials, leadership of the NDC and the NPP as well as the police and the military are engaged in a meeting over the issue.
A barricade has also been mounted at the main entrance of the Commission’s office with police and military officers manning the place.
There has been tension at the Asokore Mampong office of the Electoral Office since the start of the exercise.
On Monday, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Wa Central constituency called for a halt of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in the area.
The party also wanted the entire process audited.
Leadership of the NDC in Wa Central made the demands at an emergency press conference held on Sunday.
The NDC in Wa also accused the Electoral Commission of conniving with the governing New Patriotic Party in the area to create an undesignated registration centre at the NPP zonal office at Nakore, a suburb of Wa to allegedly register unqualified persons.
