The Francis Faki Amanquah Foundation (FFAF), an international non-governmental organisation (NGO), has awarded scholarships to six female students studying computer science and computer engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
This marks the second presentation by the Foundation, following a similar award to five female students from the same university around the same time last year.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony at KNUST, Mercy Bruce-Amanquah, founder and Chief Executive Officer of FFAF, said the initiative aligns with the Foundation’s vision of promoting careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among Ghanaian women.
“We are here today to present scholarship awards comprising tuition, accommodation, stipends, and laptops to six deserving young women studying computer science and computer engineering. This is to encourage them to chart a path to change the world with the skills they acquire here at KNUST, having been selected based on their performance over the past year,” Mrs. Bruce-Amanquah stated.
She explained that the Foundation was established in memory of her late husband, Francis Faki Amanquah, an alumnus of KNUST with a strong passion for education, particularly for girls and women.
Highlighting the gender gap in STEM fields, Mrs. Bruce-Amanquah revealed that only 28 percent of the global STEM workforce comprises women, with Ghana recording a slightly higher figure of 30 percent. She attributed the disparity to the lack of female role models in the field, a challenge the Foundation seeks to address through its scholarship and mentorship programme.
“In addition to financial assistance and laptops provided to both the first and second cohorts, the FFAF will assign mentors to guide and motivate the beneficiaries throughout their academic journey,” she added.
KNUST commends Foundation
Professor David Asamoah, Pro Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, commended the Foundation for its generous support, describing it as a significant contribution to enhancing educational outcomes for students.
“Such noble enterprises go a long way in shaping the future of our students. I urge the beneficiaries to excel in their studies, so the Foundation finds it worthwhile to sustain the programme in partnership with the International Programmes Office,” Prof. Asamoah stated.
Beneficiaries
The scholarship recipients expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support.
Christabel Benewaah, a level 200 computer science student, said the scholarship would motivate her to study harder and achieve academic excellence.
Similarly, Isabel Naa Norkor Noye described the award as timely, noting that it came when she needed it the most.
Other beneficiaries, including Delali Mina Torgah, Khadija Ndaiya Kamil, Ikhlas Adeola Abdul-Sattar, and Ampem Kobi Afriyie, also expressed gratitude to the Foundation for empowering them to pursue their academic dreams.
