Newly crowned International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight world champion, Richard 'Azonto' Commey has been ruled out of action for six weeks following an injury he sustained in his last fight.
The development cancels the much anticipated lightweight unification bout between the Ghanaian world IBF champion, Richard Commey and the Ukranian holder of the WBO and WBA lightweight belts, Vasily Lomachenko, at least by the scheduled dates.
The two were scheduled to square off on April 12 by the contract Commey signed prior to his fight with Isa Chaniev last weekend in the USA.
The development has been occasioned by an injury Commey sustained against Chaniev despite winning as early as the second round with a technical knockout.
Commey complained about a pain in the right hand, specifically the knuckle in the first round and indicated in post fight interview it needed to be examined before commenting on a possible clash against the Ukrainian warrior.
Mr Michael Amoo-Bediako, Chief Executive of the Streetwise Promotions, managers of Commey confirmed over the weekend that Commey will be out for a period of six weeks as a result of the injury.
This was confirmed after undergoing several scans to ascertain the severity of the injury.
He however assured that treatment has started in their bid to facilitate his swift return to the ring.
Lomachenko is considered a dangerous opponent for the Ghanaian champion whose rose to the top of the sport on his second try after losing the first attempt to Robert Easter Jr.
Against the Ukranian who defeated former WBO champion, Jose Pedraza in December last year to win the two belts, mixed feelings have been expressed over Commey's readiness to go into a bout of this nature.
But Commey, prior to his championship fight against Chaniev, indicated the team's awareness of the existence of such credible boxers in the division but would be ready for them when the time comes.
