Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former Director General of National Signals Bureau, has disclosed that his client has been re-arrested and detained by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).
According to Atta Akyea, this new arrest which took place on the midnight of May 13, 2025 is in relation to investigations into a said contract between the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the National Security for the provision of internet services to the GWCL.
Speaking to journalists in court on May 13, 2025, Atta Akyea questioned the processes in handling the matter, stating that the state is using “all manner of tactics” to delay justice for Kwabena Adu-Boahene.
He noted that it is unfortunate for the state to hold on to any new case against his client until the 7-day expiration of Adu-Boahene’s detention when he was supposed to have his freedom and then re-arrest him on a different charge.
“At the last sitting, the judge ordered that he should have his freedom yesterday and they said they have another matter that they are investigating concerning him so when he was supposed to have his freedom, by their calculation they released him midnight and rearrested him on the basis of the new found matters they are looking at.
“But the question is in the period in which he had the freedom, why didn’t they deal with the matter but they will leave it to midnight and rearrest him.
“Is somebody very exciting incarcerating another Ghanaian with all manner of tactics will age justice and that is very unfortunate,” he stated.
The Accra High Court has also reinstated the bail terms of Kwabena Adu Boahene after the expiration of his 7-day detention.
Kwabena Adu Boahene was on May 2, 2025, granted a bail of GhC80 million after his lawyers requested a reduction of an earlier 120 million cedis bail.
But Atta Akyea disclosed that he had been detained again by EOCO on a separate matter which wasn’t before the court.
“I have been hinted that it relates to secured internet services for the benefit of another state institution, the Ghana Water Company and that National Security provided them with gadgets and well-meaning things,” he said.
He noted that he is yet to find out from EOCO the details of this new charge and arrest.
