Acting Programme Manager, Non-Communicable Diseases Control Programme at the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Dr. Wallace Odiko-Ollennu has called for equitable distribution of health professionals to various facilities across the country.
Speaking about addressing challenges in health facilities in the country, Dr. Odiko-Ollennu urged government to ensure that human resources are fairly distributed to various health facilities.
“The human resource is not equally distributed. Some have more human resource than others. We need to have very equitable distribution of human resources so we will be able to address some of these key issues,” he said.
He further suggested that government in ensuring maintenance culture in health facilities can also establish performance indicators for health directors and facility managers in order to compel them to enforce strict regulations in maintaining facility equipment.
“We have to make sure that we have performance contracts with facility managers and health directors where the Director General is expecting to see key performance indicators at quarterly visits to see if you are maintaining your equipment and facilities and ensuring everything is on point,” he noted.
Speaking at Media General’s Health forum under the theme: “State and Future of Health Facilities: Reimaging healthcare in Ghana” on May 7, 2025, Dr. Wallace entreated Director Generals and facility managers to also consider monitoring values and attitudes of health workers in ensuring maintenance of health facilities.
“We should not forget that the software component of the healthcare facilities, people’s values and their beliefs and attitudes towards maintaining things that have been trusted in their care if we have to maintain our health facilities,” he stated.
