The High Court in Accra has sentenced Deborah Seyram Adablah, a former National Service person, to 45 days in prison for contempt of court.
The conviction stems from social media videos in which she defamed the judiciary during her high-profile legal dispute with her alleged ‘sugar daddy’.
Adablah had previously made headlines in 2023 when she filed a lawsuit against Ernest Kwesi Nimako, a former Chief Finance Officer of a bank, accusing him of breach of promise, sexual harassment, and failure to deliver on various financial and personal commitments made during their relationship.
In a contempt ruling, the court found Adablah guilty of publishing a video on social media accusing the presiding judge of bias, an act that undermined the integrity of the court. Following this, a bench warrant was issued for her arrest.
After learning of the warrant, Adablah shared another video stating her intention to surrender. In a separate video reportedly streamed live from the court complex, she was seen speaking to security officers while preparing to be transferred to Nsawam Prison. Her mobile phone, placed on her lap, captured the entire exchange.
According to Graphic.com.gh, the High Court had previously dismissed her 2023 lawsuit, ruling that the alleged relationship between Adablah and Nimako was based on immorality and had no legal grounds. The court stated that the promises of rent, car, monthly allowance, and other benefits were made in the context of an affair designed to facilitate “fornication,” and as such, no valid cause of action could arise from it.
The court emphasized that contractual obligations cannot be enforced when rooted in acts deemed illegal or immoral under Ghanaian law.
Adablah’s initial claims included demands for a lump sum as working capital, a car, monthly financial support, three years’ rent, a ring, and payments for medical and family planning expenses. However, the court’s decision firmly dismissed all claims, marking a dramatic end to one of Ghana’s most controversial personal legal battles.
