Ghanaian right-back Tariq Lamptey was given his marching orders in Brighton’s hard-fought FA Cup fifth-round victory over Newcastle United.
The Ghanaian fullback, who has been Brighton’s standout performer in recent weeks, received his second yellow card of the game for a reckless challenge on Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy, leaving his team to navigate the remaining minutes with a numerical disadvantage.
In a frenetic opening to the match, the hosts conceded a penalty, which Swedish forward Alexander Isak coolly converted in the 22nd minute.
However, Brighton and Hove Albion drew level 22 minutes later, courtesy of a strike from Gambian star Yankubah Minteh.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 83rd minute when Newcastle’s Antony Gordon was handed a straight red card for a moment of madness, lunging into a reckless challenge on defender Van Hecke.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Brighton managed to hold on and force the match into extra time.
However, Brighton’s persistence eventually paid off in the 114th minute, as Danny Welbeck scored the winner, latching onto Solly March’s pinpoint pass and deftly clipping his shot over Dubravka to send the Seagulls soaring into the quarterfinals.
This triumph marks Brighton’s first quarterfinal appearance in the FA Cup since the 2022/23 season.
Fabian Hurzeler’s men will face the winner of the Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town clash, scheduled to take place on Monday at 19:30 GMT.
Meanwhile, Lamptey’s red card has dealt a blow to his momentum, ruling him out of Brighton’s upcoming league clash against Fulham, just as he was finding his rhythm with a string of consecutive starts
